Emerson College

CHallenge

Emerson College’s Los Angeles home is an architectural masterpiece, but its bold design presented a formidable engineering puzzle. Located on a high-traffic stretch of Sunset Boulevard, the building’s unique geometry and sheer metal laminate facade created a “no-access” zone for traditional installation equipment.

Standard swing stages and cranes were not an option due to the building’s structure and the logistical constraints of one of Hollywood’s busiest thoroughfares. For eighteen months, the project required a deep dive into material science and structural engineering to ensure the signage could be mounted securely without compromising the building’s specialized exterior.

Solution

The team at Tyko Sign Group spent over a year and a half in the “ideation-to-engineering” phase. To solve the access issue, we bypassed ground-based equipment entirely. Our team developed a specialized rope-access strategy, which involved technicians rappelling over the roof to work directly on the sign band.

With only two narrow catwalks available for tool staging and the rest of the workspace fully exposed to the ground 100 feet below, the installation required surgical precision. Over the course of six days, our crew methodically executed the mount, navigating the delicate metal laminate with the disciplined focus of a high-altitude climb.

Outcome

The result is a flawless, beaming landmark that anchors Emerson College’s presence in the heart of the entertainment capital. The installation has become a permanent part of the Hollywood nightscape, serving as a beacon for both the campus and the community.

“When we decided to put our name on our iconic building in Hollywood, we wanted more than just a sign—we wanted a statement piece that fully claims our place as a leader in the entertainment business. Tyko Sign Group was an excellent partner for the college. Their team demonstrated extraordinary technical skill, rappelling off the roof to work via rope access against a sheer metal laminate facade. Today, our LA campus is crowned with a beaming landmark that stands as a beacon for our students and the entire city.” — President, Emerson College
